Why Mommy Needs Yoga Class

A friend of mine shared this lovely piece with me this morning on Facebook. She is a yoga instructor herself and pretty awesome one at that!

Your yoga clothes are on and you’re getting ready to head out the door. Your spouse (or babysitter or mother or friend) has arrived and this is it: your much-treasured, hard to come by, once-a-week night out to yoga class.

“Mommy, please don’t go,” your child says, breaking your heart a little bit. And then comes the dreaded question.

“Why do you have to go to yoga class?”

Before you put down your bags and change your mind about leaving the house, here are four reasons to give your child a big hug and kiss, and get yourself out the door.

1. You’ll Feel Good All Week Long

Yes, you’ll miss out on this one evening of dinner, bath, and bedtime. But, on the other hand, you’ll be refreshed and refueled for a whole new week of mothering. You’ll sleep better, make healthier food choices, and be in a better mood for having gone to class.

2. You’re Setting a Great Example

What better way to model the importance of exercise and self-care than by actually doing it? We can’t expect our children to be as active as they should be without showing them how it’s done.

3. You’ll Parent Better

Parenting, good parenting, is hard work. In yoga class, you’ll practice the skills needed to be the best mother you can be: strength, flexibility, openness, loving-kindness, endurance and maybe most of all, patience.

4. You Deserve It

We do so much for our children (and partners) that sometimes we need to be reminded and reassured that we deserve to take care of ourselves, and have some fun, too. But we do—you do.

So the next time your child asks you why you are going to yoga instead of staying home, turn to her and say, “Because I love you, and I love me, too. Because I want to be the best Mommy I can be. Because yoga makes me feel good inside.”

Give that kiss and hug, try not to feel guilty, grab your bag and GO to class.
